In fact, hydrogen is not a fuel but an energy carrier. The cars fill up with hydrogen, which is converted into electrical energy in the vehicle by a so-called fuel cell. The only waste product is water. OG operates filling stations with green hydrogen for passenger cars (700 Bar) and large vehicles (350 Bar).

Hydrogen is the lightest, most common and simplest element in the universe. The symbol of hydrogen is H, derived from the Latin word Hydrogenium. Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and non-toxic substance. Hydrogen is the most versatile energy carrier.

COMPLETELY CO2 FREE

Tank-to-wheel, a hydrogen car emits nothing. Well-to-wheel, this depends on where the hydrogen comes from. Grey hydrogen is often made from natural gas. Green hydrogen is made from wind and solar energy.

OG hydrogen produced with renewable energy is completely CO2 free. In addition, hydrogen is easy to store and transport. This makes optimal use of renewable energy sources. Also, hydrogen is literally everywhere, which makes it an exciting source of energy.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FUEL CARD

There are currently five stations in the Netherlands and OG is currently active with ten projects. The infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations differs enormously per country. In Germany, for example, there are already around 100 hydrogen filling stations and in Belgium there are only two. Click here for an overview of all filling stations abroad.
At OG you can fill up with the regular cards: debit card, fuel card and possibly a credit card. We offer the OG fuel card for free. With other providers you sometimes need to apply for a separate tag or your own fuel card. You can check this with the operator concerned. For refuelling in Germany there is a universal card, namely the H2 live fuel card.

DRIVING ON HYDROGEN IS SAFE

Petrol stations have to comply with strict regulations. Hydrogen is not explosive in itself. Even if hydrogen escapes from the tank, the risk of fire or explosion is low and no higher than for example with petrol or LPG. How do I refuel with hydrogen? Filling up with hydrogen is not very different from filling up with other fuels. It is most similar to refuelling Bio-CNG/CNG.

WHO IS HYDROGEN DRIVING SUITABLE FOR?

At the moment, most hydrogen-powered vehicles are driven by lease car drivers, public transport and taxi companies. This is partly because clean vehicles are increasingly a requirement in government tenders. Leasing is also possible; a small number of lease car suppliers now offer a hydrogen car ex-factory.

HYDROGEN CARS

A hydrogen car is an electric car that uses hydrogen as its energy source. In a fuel cell, the hydrogen is converted into water with oxygen. The electricity this produces drives the engine. Hydrogen cars do not emit CO2, which means they are completely CO2-free. The only thing a hydrogen emits is water vapour and air. By driving on hydrogen the air quality improves considerably, especially in cities.

AVAILABLE CARS

Two cars are currently available ex-factory: the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Nexo. The range of a hydrogen car is approximately between 500 and 650 kilometres. For buses and trucks this is often customised, so that it depends on the size of the hydrogen tank that has been installed. Second-hand cars are also already available. VEHICLE CONVERSION

It is possible to have an existing vehicle converted to hydrogen. This is already done for buses and trucks. For example, a hydrogen range extender is placed in an electric bus so that you can drive more kilometres electrically. Diesel chassis for trucks are also converted to hydrogen. There are also companies that convert delivery vans and passenger cars to hydrogen.
